The San Francisco Zoo is located along the Great Coast Highway between Lake Merced and the Pacific Ocean. Plotted on 100 acres the zoo is home to more than 1000 animals including the oldest black rhinoceros in North America and the birthplace of Koko the gorilla. Koko was born in 1974 and passed away in 2016. The zoo was originally named Fleishhacker Zoo after its founder Herbert Fleishhacker. Construction of the zoo began in 1929 and most of the animals were transferred from Golden Gate Park.

If you are spending a few days in San Francisco check into CityPass as the zoo is one of the included attractions and can save you some money. General admission for Adults 12-64 years old is $29 weekdays and $31 weekends and holidays, seniors 64 years and older is $24 weekdays and $26 weekends and holidays, children 2-11 years old is $20 weekdays and $22 weekends and holidays, children under 2 are free. Retired and active military received discounted admission at the SF Resident rates. Parking is $11 on weekdays and $13 on weekends and holidays. The zoo is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM entry ends at 4:00 PM.

There are a few options for food to be purchased at the zoo, but guests are welcome to bring in their food. No glass containers or alcohol are allowed in the zoo. Food is expensive and not great, so plan on bringing your own you will be much happier. Usually, we bring our food, but during an unplanned stop at the zoo, we had to eat.
