A smaller RV park is located next to the Calaveras County Fairgrounds. We arrived on Friday for a 2 day stay during the Blues & Bones Festival. (I will review for the festival under “Fairs, Festivals & More”). It is a little tricky to find even with the signs they have, it is located behind the main parking lot of the fairgrounds. RV Park’s rate is $40 per night, $35 for seniors, $25 for tent site. The rate includes water, power, and sewer. The park is self-service and open 24 hours a day. The spots are pull-through. Frogtown does not take reservations except for special events like the Calaveras County Fair.
They offer full hookups with water, power, and sewer, and have a few tent sights. Each hook-up pedal stool houses the hook-ups for two sights so depending on which site you’re hooking up on you will either pull through or back in. There are no real markers or anything to determine the boundaries of each site. But there is ample room for your RV and a tow vehicle.
There is a public restroom with a shower that is clean and the water pressure is pretty good. We did have a little issue because the bathrooms were locked and the office was closed when we arrived. Also, it does no good to call the park office number and go to the after-hours number, this put us through to some garage door service company that did not have any idea what we were talking about or any assistance to give to us. We did stumble upon the groundskeeper’s trailer since we went looking for some assistance. So, they were able to give us the door code, even though he did not seem too happy that we knocked on their door, even with apologizing for bothering them (but I guess others got tired of using the code or did not know it, as the doors got propped open with blocks.
There is a nice amount of space between the sites so you have room to have a nice outside seating area. But this park is barebones, they do not offer any amenities such as tables (it did look like a couple of spots may have had picnic tables, but I am not sure). It is a pet-friendly park; dogs must be kept on the lease at all times. We did not take Roxie with us on this trip so we did not explore the park with her to check out things.
Note if you want to have a small warming fire or open flame to cook, you must get a free permit from Cal-Fire online.
Now there were a couple of issues with our spot. We had three spots together with our friends we were traveling with and they accommodated us when we made the reservations so we could all be together. But where we were must have been close to the main sewer cover because we smelled sewer the entire time, we were they. Also, there was construction happening and for some reason, they decided to start running an escalator at 7:00 am on a Saturday, so it was not a pleasant way to start the day.
But it is a very convenient location if you are attending something at the fairgrounds and it is a short walk to the main gates. It is also a short drive into town so if you need to do any restocking or just want to explore the town. If you enjoy wine tasting or breweries it is a short drive to get to Murphy’s.
